This film needs to be appreciated for so many reasons, but first and foremost because it was directed by the marvelous Stanley Donen, also the director of Singin’ in the Rain and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers—only my two favorite musicals and movies OF ALL TIME, can anyone else believe one person was talented enough to direct both?!! I sure can’t—aaaand Charade starred Walter Matthau, who plays the endearingly grumpy Horace Vandergelder in Hello, Dolly!, which, as luck would have it, miraculously happens to be my OTHER favorite musical OF ALL TIME. Not only that, in the past, I’ve always mixed up the title of Paris When it Sizzles (a later Audrey film) with that of An American in Paris, which stars Gene Kelly, who co-directed (and starred in) Singin’ in the Rain and later directed Hello, Dolly! Coincidence?!?! Actually, all of that information is completely pointless and has no significance whatsoever, but I’m telling you anyway because the web of connections made me ridiculously excited. (All of these tangents and you’re still wondering why it’s taken me nearly a year and a half to chug through 30 movies? Please.)
But I digress! Back to Charade… Watching this, I don’t think I have ever felt more cultured or film buff-y. Seriously, watching this movie made me feel like such a cool-cat hipster and so cultured that I could be a wheel of cheese (in the best way). If you haven’t watched it, please do. Please please PLEASE. Shirtless Cary Grant and the whole age difference thing was all pretty disturbing (I mean, if I’ve got to watch someone really old fall in love with Audrey, please at least make it Gregory Peck—definitely not Grandpa Carey, Billy Holden, or that creep from Love in the Afternoon), but it’s still so worth your time. Please watch it, I’m begging you.
